City Swiftlets !
Posted by: ngguanhuah
It seems that the [illegal?] Swiftlet rearing industry is everywhere, even in Kuala Terengganu - right in the centre of town.
This is a foto taken from Uptown Yentin Hotel. Nice town beside the sea, with no ugly highrise buildings.

....nice town with no ugly high rise buildings..

Too bad it is going to turn into another Mentakab, with many swiftlet-houses right in the centre of town. Bird shit and noise rules the night and one have to walk along the road looking upwards.

.....the culprit....

Since neighbour already build his BH, I also build mine. Very big untung man, few thousand Ringgit one kilo. Bolih cepat kaya.

....another culprit ??....

Can anyone tell us whether swiftlet-rearing in town area is legal? If not, who can we complain to?
These houses should be built in estate areas or near rivers where there are no residential buildings. I cannot understand why the govt have not come up with guidelines if they have no objection to this new industry.
Perhaps they want people to spend hugh sums of monies building the houses and then tell them it is illegal and have to be demolished. Of course also can kautim [settle the issue with a bribe]...sigh!!!

I came across a documentary that in France, they raised bees in the city on roof tops for honey.

It appears that due to rich flora in the city, the honey produced is richer.

There is a company who rent rooftops of buildings to do this as a business.
I was traveling from KL to Raub and noted the many BH ; I was told they can contribute to lots of profit.Majority owners are Chinese.I am happy they are able to make more money. Of course this BH are in secluded areas and not in the center of the town.
Municipal council should monitor these activities and maintain hygiene level.
One could lodge complaints with the city council or maybe one can approach an MP.

I seriously oppose the setting up of swiflet farms in the city or in residential areas.

These irresponsible businessmen are only looking for cheaper costs and high profit, and have no concerns for the wellbeing of other nearby residents.

Swiftlet farms could contribute to fungal lung infections such as cryptococussus and histoplasmosis. The small particles from bird droppings and bird feathers could turn airborne and cause such fungal lung infections if you happened to breathe in those small particles.
Honestly, I am in the midst of investing in this very industry in our house in Sungai Petani. I think thus far there's no law regulating to this except for Penang.
When I was a boy residing in Ipoh, I always remember that during the night, lots of birds (mainly swifts) would line the electric and telephone wires to bed! Also many of the five-footways ceilings and corners would be nesting places for these birds and walking along them would be like passing a gauntlet avoiding bird droppings! Cars will not park beneath those wires but unweary drivers would to their dismay when their cars are bombed with white bird droppings laced with black or brown.

These houses at least kept them indoors and provide income for some people and eventually the nation! Tolerate them lah!
as long as gullible people think that consuming 'birds nest' keeps them YOUNG, which makes the product fetching high prices, there will be lots of resourceful entrepreneurs.

actually, you can get the same nutrition from a eggwhite or a cake of tofu.

bird's nest is in fact the mucus vomited from the swiftlets mouth. who would want to eat an animal's saliva? Would you eat your dog's or cat's saliva TO STAY YOUNG?

Mucus from a baby's running nose can also be named "Baby's nest'. Want to buy some?
I think one day MACC will want to rent roof tops also.
Woody San, we would never know to what extend some people will go to stay young or look beautiful.
First of all, I have no objection to explore the potentials of this industry. But it has to be done right. Like the big poultry and pig farms., they are located away from civilzation and not pollute the towns and cities.

tt bro, I hope you are not serious about going into this very risky business. I just turned down my [retired] friend's offer to build two blocks of BH for him because the few hundred thousands of his [retirement] funds can vanish if the birds don't come or face other breeding/maintainence problems.

Ask any Swiflet-Farm operators and they [the honest ones] will tell you that it has a 10% chance of success only. There are endless problems including theft/pilferage of the precious merchandise and worst of all NO BIRDS!!

Some Malaysians never learn from the mistakes of others. Remember the BIG DURIAN BOOM ? Huge acres of matured and productive rubber trees and palm oil were felled and replaced by durians trees. Today when there is a surplus, you can go to the farms and buy a fruit for 50 sen.
In Chinese there is a phrase: "Sun See Hang" (New toilets) for some harebrain new ideas and many would want to try.

When so many enter the toilet, although new, it would overflow and stink, then all will suffer and run away.

This is so typical of Malaysians.
No staying power! Unlike patrickJB! (Belanja hah, brother for saying this!)
