BUKIT MERTAJAM: Enforce-ment officers from the Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) confiscated speakers from three shophouses rearing swiftlets after numerous warnings were ignored.
Municipal councillor Oon Neow Aun said a raid was conducted at the shophouses following complaints of noise pollution from residents in Taman Usahniaga.
“We had issued many warning notices to the operators to reduce the sound of birds chirping from the speakers to attract the swiftlets, but they had ignored our notices,” he said.
He said the operators had been given five months’ grace to cooperate but they had refused.
In the 11am raid yesterday, the enforcement team members seized more than 20 speakers.
Oon said this was the first such raid in central Seberang Prai.
“MPSP had allowed the birdhouse operators to set the music volume up to 40db (decibels), but the operators at the three shophouses set the volume between 75db and 80db, which had posed a nuisance to the neighbours,” he said.
