Swift eggs are almost uniformly ovate and glossy white in color. Clutch sizes range from only one or two. Incubation periods tend to be long, ranging from 19–20 days to about 28 days. Newly hatched chicks are blind, helpless, and devoid of any natal down. A fluffy down-like semi-plume covering starts growing within a few days, which precedes the growth of the first typical contour plumage. Development of the chicks is slow compared to other similar-sized birds and takes from four to six and a half weeks. The young may leave the crowded nest and cling to the walls of the nest for a week or more before actually flying out.
